Alexander Gauge Friar Tuck
|
Born: 29th July 1914, Wenzhou, China. Died: 29th August 1960, Woking, Surrey. Alexander Gauge was born in a Methodist Mission in China and, before coming to Britain, went to school in California. He had been acting in plays on Broadway since 1945, often in Shakespearean roles. Although he often played sinister roles in his early films, he also seemed to display a gift for comedy. This was evident in his portrayal of Friar Tuck in ‘The Adventures of Robin Hood’, a role he played in 89 of the episodes (including 2 as his own twin brother). Friar Tuck was the role for which he will always be best remembered. After the series ended he made a few more TV appearances, and played the title role in the TV series ‘The Adventures of Brigadier Wellington-Bull’. Sadly, Alexander died in 1960, after an overdose. He was 46. |
