Hugh McDermott    Duncan of Stoneykirk

Born: 20th March 1908, Edinburgh.  Died: 29th January 1972, London.

Scottish-born character actor Hugh McDermott appeared in 4 highly entertaining episodes as the fiercely proud and canny Scottish outlaw, Duncan of Stoneykirk. Although always suspicious of Duncan’s motives, deep down Robin Hood had a grudging respect for him as Duncan was fighting the same battle in his homeland as Robin. Hugh’s screen career began in the mid-1930s. Often playing Americans, he portrayed jovial characters in a number of his films. His career varied from leading roles in minor films, to small parts in major films. Hugh’s film highlights include ‘The Seventh Veil’, ‘No Orchids for Miss Blandish’ and ‘Lilli Marlene’. In 1943 he wrote a book, ‘So You Want To Be An Actor’. Hugh continued with occasional film appearances, including ‘The First Men in the Moon’. He had guest roles in a number of popular TV series such as ‘Dixon of Dock Green’, ‘Danger Man’, ‘The Saint’ and ‘Man in a Suitcase’. Married to actress Daphne Courtney, Hugh McDermott died in 1972 at the age of 63.
