Ian Hunter Sir Richard of the Lea

Born: 13th June 1900, Kenilworth, Cape Town, South Africa. Died: 23rd September 1975, Northwood, Middlesex. Ian Hunter appeared in seven episodes as Sir Richard of the Lea, hopeless with money but a good friend to Robin. Having moved to Britain with his parents as a teenager, Ian served in France after joining the Army in 1917. His onstage debut came in 1919 and his movie career in 1924, appearing in around ten films of the silent era. He continued with stage and film work until, in the mid-1930s, he moved to Hollywood. Among his best remembered American films were the 1938 Warner Brothers Oscar-winning ‘The Adventures of Robin Hood’ (as Richard the Lionheart), ‘The Little Princess’ and ‘Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde’. 1942 saw him returning to Britain to join the Royal Navy and serve in World War II, after which he stayed and resumed his acting career. Ian Hunter’s screen career continued until 1963. Married to Catherine Pringle with two sons, he died in 1975 at the age of 75.
