John Dearth   Various Roles

Born: no details.  Died: 17th March 1984.

John Dearth was a regular member of the supporting cast in Season 1, featuring in 28 (10 uncredited) episodes, and made a couple of guest appearances thereafter. Like many others in the first season, he often played 2 roles in the same episode. From such diverse parts as De Belvoir in ‘Richard the Lion-Heart’ (not to mention his own gatekeeper!) to the deaf and dumb Bodo in ‘The Thorkil Ghost’, John’s acting skill was apparent. Born John Paton, one of his earlier stage appearances was in J.M. Barrie’s ‘Dear Brutus’, in which he portrayed Will Dearth. This role moved John so profoundly, he changed his surname to Dearth. He had small roles in films such as ‘Look Back in Anger’, ‘The Wreck of the Mary Deare’ and ‘Road to Hong Kong’. On TV he made guest appearances in most of Hannah Weinstein’s Sapphire swashbuckling productions. In the 1960s and 1970s he guested in popular shows such as ‘Dixon of Dock Green’, ‘No Hiding Place’, Z Cars’, ‘The Saint’ and ‘Doctor Who’. On radio his voice could be heard in a number of plays, as he was a member of the BBC Radio Repertory Company during the 1960s. John Dearth died in 1984, although no details of his birth could be found, he would probably have been around his early sixties. Lynn Dearth (1946-1994), a respected stage actress with a few TV and film credits to her name, was John’s daughter.
