Leslie Phillips   Various Roles

Born: 20th April 1924, Tottenham, London.

Leslie Phillips appeared in 4 episodes of the series in different roles. Although thought of as a plummy-voiced Englishman, he actually had a cockney accent as a child. Leslie studied at the Italia Conti School, making his acting debut in ‘Peter Pan’ at the age of five. He went on to make frequent childhood stage and screen appearances. Serving with the Durham Light Infantry for 4 years during World War II, he returned to acting when the war ended. His star began to rise significantly in the 1950s, and he finally gained leading roles by the end of that decade. On the big screen he is probably best known for his involvement in the ‘Doctor’ and the early ‘Carry On’ series of comedy films. In the 1970s Leslie found himself relegated to lesser roles on TV, and in films starred in inferior comedies. More recently he has reinvigorated his career with a variety of different roles in Hollywood films, proving that his repertoire stretches far beyond the suave ladies’ man type of role that he became famed for. His distinctive voice was heard in the BBC radio comedy series ‘The Navy Lark’ from 1958 to 1977. Leslie’s first marriage from 1948 to 1965 was to actress Penelope Bartley, and together they had 4 children. He married his second wife, actress Angela Scoular, in 1982. Awarded an OBE in 1998, his autobiography called ‘Hello’ was published in 2007.
