Patrick Troughton   Various Roles

Born: 25th March 1920, Mill Hill, London.  Died: 28th March 1987, Columbus, Georgia, USA.

Patrick Troughton appeared in 8 episodes of the series in various roles. He trained as an actor at London’s Embassy School of Acting and then Leighton Rollin’s Studio for Actors at Long Island, New York. Upon the outbreak of World War II he returned to Britain, but narrowly escaped disaster when his returning ship hit a mine off the British coast. Joining the Royal Navy in 1940, Patrick rose through the ranks to become captain of a motor gunboat on duty in the North Sea. When the war ended he returned to the theatre, and made his TV debut in 1947. He became the first actor to portray Robin Hood on the small screen in 1953, in a short 6-part serial. The role seemed ideally suited for him, as Patrick was an excellent swordsman. Although playing many varied roles in his career, he will probably be best remembered as the second incarnation of TV’s Doctor Who. William Hartnell had quit the role due to ill-health and Patrick’s portrayal differed quite considerably from the former. An actor with a prolific output of film, TV and theatre roles to his name, this would eventually begin to take its toll on his health. Patrick suffered two major heart attacks, one in 1978 and the second in 1984. Stubbornly ignoring his doctor’s advice concerning his heart condition, he continued working. Whilst attending a sci-fi convention in America, a third heart attack proved fatal. He was 67 years of age. He was married to Shelagh Dunlop and they had 6 children, two of whom, David and Michael, became successful actors in their own right. Sam Troughton, Patrick’s grandson, played Much in the 2006-7 TV Series ‘Robin Hood’.
